Abiomed is seeking a Senior Product Development Engineer to join our team in Baltimore for the continuing development of portable artificial lung devices (ECMO).  In this role, you will be responsible for design, verification testing and design transfer of product improvements as well as development of next gen devices. 

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities many include:

  • Lead design activities, including requirements translation, mechanical design, verification testing and design transfer for product improvements and next gen devices.
  • Lead brainstorming efforts to identify potential solutions considering design trade-offs including design for manufacturability.
  • Rapid-prototype, test and iterate designs to develop the most advantageous solution using a ‘break-it-fast’ mindset.
  • Construct solid models and drawings.  Apply GD&T and stack-up analyses.
  • Prepare design reviews and present to peers and review team to ensure the technical veracity of the product design.
  • Provide input and updates to project schedule.
  • Bring solutions to market by collaborating with an exceptional cross-functional team.
  • When needed use problem-solving skills to support failure investigations.
     

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering
  • 10+ years of progressively complex mechanical engineering experience bringing designs from concept to production
  • Proficiency with engineering CAD, preferably SolidWorks
  • Experience in a regulated industry, medical device development experience highly desirable
  • Ability to effectively communicate design ideas and test results verbally and in written form
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time, as necessary, as Abiomed has multiple office locations

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of any of the following: injection molding, rapid prototyping, electro-mechanical design, or failure analysis.
  • MS in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering
