Abiomed is redefining team-driven success while reshaping heart recovery.  Here, new ideas are welcomed and encouraged, learning is constant, and our dynamic setting enable positive people to do profoundly important work.  The successful candidate will lead test engineering initiatives within the Access Engineering group (product development), with a focus on interventional cardiology devices and accessories.   The role will demand experience in establishing and qualifying test methods, coordinating test execution, and reporting out results for projects through the development cycle. Additionally, the individual will be responsible for managing and maintaining an engineering lab with equipment supporting testing, rapid prototyping, and inspection/analysis.  

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Establish and improve novel test methods to support feasibility, characterization, and verification/validation of Access product that facilitate the placement of the Impella heart pumps.
  • Coordinate, execute, and report out mechanical testing with support from junior staff and technicians throughout introduction of products to market.
  • Develop test strategies as the lead test engineer of a cross functional Core Team within the product development process, owning the closure of the Design Trace Matrix. Ensure strategies meet feasibility and verification/validation needs of project.
  • Develop an expertise for existing critical test methods and ISO standards relevant to Access Engineering product groups.
  • Mentor and oversee junior engineering and technician staff during execution of tests.
  • Support the development of design input requirements based off user needs
  • Conduct Measurement System Analysis as appropriate
  • Manage an engineering lab space leveraged by the Access Engineering team (12+ individuals), ensuring acceptable equipment qualification and calibration, organization, and safety.
  • Actively maintain storage of lab equipment and disposables for engineering team
  • Coordinate with external vendors, test houses, and equipment manufacturers for project needs

 

Job Qualifications:

 

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or directly related scientific discipline
  • 8+ years of working within a product development setting of mechanical or biomedical discipline
  • 5+ years of leading successful test method development and execution, preferably within the medical device space
  • Strong inspirational leadership style; inquisitive approach to execution
  • Results driven and highly adaptable
  • Demonstrated history of successful organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly in a variety of settings
  • May require travel up to 5% - US and EU
