We are a dynamic development team that drives innovative solutions to improve patient care.  As a Sr.II Product Development Engineer, you will drive design initiatives and engineering activities for the next generation of cutting-edge intelligent cardiac pump systems. You’ll have a tangible impact on our business and be rewarded by a positive impact to patients' lives.


Candidate will be responsible for roles in complex technical efforts, design initiatives, product/process development, and problem solving as part of the Impella Cardiology Product Development team.  Strong communication, planning, organization, and hands on skills required.  She/he must showcase an inspirational and collaborative style as both a team member and leader as this position will interact with all functions, both commercial and technical (i.e. research, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, clinical, marketing) to ensure Abiomed continues on our successful mission to recover hearts and save lives.    


Principle Duties and Responsibilities: thermal, reliability magnetic and systems analyses to

  • Provide Product Development expertise leading Impella pump and system design and engineering initiatives
  • Establish design goals and specifications based on requirements and user needs
  • Fabricate prototypes with assistance from junior staff, technical support team (Machine Shop, Technicians and Designers), and suppliers
  • Document designs by constructing solid models and drawings with SolidWorks using GD&T and stack-up analyses
  • Lead and participate in brainstorming efforts to identify potential solutions and innovations
  • Prepare design reviews and present to peers and review team. Ensure the technical integrity of the product design
  • Effectively communicate activity status, issues, and mitigation plans with key stakeholders
  • Collaborate to ensure compliance with design controls, company quality policy, and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Mentor junior staff for timely completion of tasks per plan without direct supervision
  • Suggest, contribute, and champion initiatives to improve the Engineering Department’s operations and procedures


Job Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical, Biomedical Engineering or directly related scientific discipline, MS Preferred
  • 8+ years of related engineering or product development experience with a Bachelors degree or 6 years with Masters or PhD
  • Experience throughout production development, including Requirement definition, Design Characterization and Design for Manufacturing expertise
  • Team oriented.  Proven teamwork skills in a cross-functional engineering environment, ability to motivate and empower team members, and set and manage expectations
  • Able to work and communicate (oral and written) cross-functionally to achieve project objectives
  • Strong problem-solving skills and experience identifying root cause 
  • 3D modeling and 2D drawing experience required (Solidworks preferred)
  • Experience applying statistical analysis. Six Sigma and/or Design for Six Sigma; Green Belt Preferred
  • Customer-centric design, development, and engagement approach. Knowledge in medical device clinical use, design controls and regulating standards (cath lab and/or cardiothoracic/vascular surgical environments is a plus)
  • May require up to 15% travel – US & EU
