Job Description:

The Senior Product Development Engineer I will support complex technical efforts, design initiatives and engineering / product development methodology improvements. 


Principle Duties and Responsibilities: vibration, thermal, reliability magnetic and systems analyses to

  • Provide Product Development expertise supporting cannula design for Abiomed’s ECMO and Impella initiatives.
  • Establish design goals and specifications based on requirements, user needs and clinical inputs.
  • Perform design-trade-offs to define system architectures.
  • Perform mechanical, fluid, reliability, and systems analyses to support new and existing designs
  • Fabricate prototypes with assistance from technical support team (Process Engineer, Machine Shop, Technicians and Designers) and suppliers.
  • Document designs by constructing solid models and drawings with Solidworks using GD&T and stack-up analyses
  • Work with internal and external manufacturing partners to ensure producible designs (DFM)
  • Support technical and programmatic risk, ensuring effective risk identification, assessment and mitigation.
  • Participate & drive brainstorming efforts to identify potential solutions.
  • Prepare design reviews and present to peers and review team. Ensure the technical integrity of the product design.
  • Effectively communicate activity status, issues and mitigation plans with key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate to ensure compliance with design controls, company quality policy and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Author and maintain applicable documentation.
  • Suggest, contribute to initiatives to improve the Engineering Department’s operations and procedures.


Job Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical, Biomedical Engineering or directly related scientific discipline, MS Preferred
  • 5-8 years of related engineering or product development, preferably medical device.
  • History in cannula design and knowledge of applicable plastics processing preferred.
  • History of applying fundamental concepts of mechanical design & material properties to drive product development.
  • Team oriented.  Proven teamwork skills in a cross-functional engineering environment, ability to motivate and empower team members, set and manage expectations.
  • 3D modeling experience (Solidworks preferred) with a history of utilizing advance analytical methods such as FEA, Fluid Dynamics or tolerance analysis to vet designs and mitigate risk during early development.
  • Experience applying statistical analysis. Six Sigma and/or Design for Six Sigma; Green Belt Preferred
  • Experience planning/executing acute or chronic animal studies, or other in-vivo evaluations, is a plus.
  • Ability to work and communicate cross-functionally to achieve project objectives.
  • Strong problem solving skills and experience identifying root cause.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly, effectively and frequently (oral and written)
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results 
  • Demonstrated history of meeting goals and getting results.
  • Knowledge in medical device clinical use, design controls and regulating standards.  Knowledge of cath lab and/or cardiothoracic/vascular surgical environments is a plus.
  • May require up to 20% travel – US & EU
