Medical Director, Intensive Care Management

The Medical Director will report to the Chief Medical Officer of Abiomed and will be responsible for the development and execution of the company’s medical and clinical affairs strategy related to intensive care management of patients treated with mechanical circulatory support with a specific focus on the Impella and Breethe platforms.  The emphasis on provider education, external communications, and clinical research through evidence generation and publication. This physician will use her/his cardiology expertise and experience to craft and execute a scientifically sound educational roadmap that identifies and disseminates through didactic education and proctorships the best practices for Impella and Breethe use in cardiogenic shock. Additionally, the director will collaborate with Abiomed’s engineering group on product development and develop a communications strategy to inform the medical community about Abiomed’s product portfolio.

Abiomed’s primary markets are in the US, Germany, and Japan. The Medical Director will represent Abiomed’s business around the world, engaging clinicians and thought leaders across the nation as well as in Europe and Japan. The responsibilities will include frequent travel both domestically and internationally, with a significant amount of time expected in Abiomed’s Danvers, MA Headquarters, and in Breethe’s Baltimore, MD office.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design a medical affairs strategy and plan to expand company growth leveraging educational programming, development and use of evidence-based investigator-initiated studies, peer-reviewed publication, and effective communication of study results with a primary focus on the intensivist and heart failure physician and nurse communities
  • Leadership of critical care and cardiac surgical advisory board and an author of multiple chapters for the intensive care e-book for Impella management in intensive care for education development and to help assess educational needs in the critical care community on decision-making about device selection but also on outcomes.
  • Outreach to Key Stakeholders/ KOLs in the intensive care community - as Abiomed advances the clinical evidence and influence guideline development having an intensivist aiding in the drafting of guidelines for the intensive care community
  • Clinical Affairs – a key contributor to the trial design elements for clinical trials.  In the short term, for RECOVER-IV & SURPASS RCTs and in the future development of clinical evidence generation strategies for ECMO and Ecpella uses.  As Abiomed plans RECOVER-IV (AMI cardiogenic Shock RCT) the candidate will be a key physician contributor to developing protocols for ICU management of AMI Cardiogenic shock patients and post-op cardiac surgical patients will be key in the planning and trial execution, similar to a technical committee that has been deemed valuable for Protect-IV, an equivalent committee to optimize decision-making in the ICU around access management, weaning and escalation protocols will be a key driver to success of these trials.
  • Product Development/Advanced Engineering
  • leadership in the integration of ECMO with Impella including SmartAssist elements and cannula development.
  • Smart Assist Development – provide intensive care insight about what are the priorities for the physicians and nurses who are using this technology the most will be valuable. In addition, SmartAssist as an integrated strategy for ECpella management will also be a key product differentiator and he has many ideas about optimal sensor strategies.
  • Technology Development on Gas Exchange –
  • Leadership for Abiomed’s advisory boards of KOLs focused on intensivists and heart failure specialties to identify opportunities for optimization of educational programs, clinical evidence needs and product development recommendations
  • Develop strategies that incorporate use of non-traditional data sources such as registries and real-world data as part of the plan
  • Interface with clinical investigational sites to ensure proper oversight / monitoring of Abiomed sponsored clinical trials
  • Interface with the Abiomed publications team to ensure a robust strategy to communicate research results
  • Provide oversight of Abiomed funded fellowship programs
  • Establish and maintain a professional and credible image with key physicians, consultants, vendors and lead the development of posters and oral presentations for scientific meetings
  • Maintain knowledge of competitive technologies in addition to medical, technical, and biomedical developments related to ABIOMED products

 

QUALIFICATIONS:    

  • MD in cardiology required, preferably with expertise in intensive care and /or heart failure focused on experience with MCS device management Minimum of 5 years of experience in clinical medicine, preferably an intensivist/pulmonologist and physician/engineer with an extensive amount of ECMO experience
  • Demonstrated success in trial design and execution with diverse research teams
  • Clinical leadership of an MCS service, preferably an ECMO service at a leading academic medical center, with hands on experience in patient management
  • Excellent analytical skills required; formal training in epidemiology and/or statistics is preferred
  • Industry experience in a medical device organization (medical affairs, clinical research, or pharmacovigilance) is preferred but not required
  • Experience working with senior executives and a Board of Directors is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, motivational, and team-building skills, and the ability to work in a multicultural, global environment
  • Ability to make critical strategic business decisions and manage competing stakeholder expectations
  • Ability to travel frequently (average 50%), both domestically and internationally (Germany, Italy and Japan primarily)
