The Medical Director will report to the Chief Medical Officer of Abiomed and will be responsible for the development and execution of the company’s medical and clinical affairs strategy related to Nephrology with a specific focus on preserving the kidneys and renal function during a cardiac event while on the Impella device. The Medical Director with focus on provider education, external communications, and clinical research through evidence generation and publication. This physician will use her/his nephrology expertise and experience to craft and execute a scientifically sound educational roadmap. Additionally, the director will collaborate with Abiomed’s engineering group on product development and develop a communications strategy to inform the medical community about Abiomed’s product portfolio.


Abiomed’s primary markets are in the US, Germany, and Japan. The Medical Director will represent Abiomed’s business around the world, engaging clinicians and thought leaders across the nation as well as in Europe and Japan. The responsibilities will include frequent travel (once restrictions lifted due to COVID-19) both domestically and internationally, with a significant amount of time expected in Abiomed’s Danvers, MA Headquarters.



  • Design a medical affairs strategy and plan to expand company growth leveraging educational programming, development and use of evidence-based investigator-initiated studies, peer-reviewed publication, and effective communication of study results with a primary focus on nephrology
  • Outreach to Key Stakeholders/ KOLs in the nephrology community - as Abiomed advances the clinical evidence and influences guideline development.
  • Clinical Affairs – a key contributor to the trial design elements for clinical trials. 
  • Leadership for Abiomed’s advisory boards of KOLs focused on nephrology specialties to identify opportunities for optimization of educational programs, clinical evidence needs and product development recommendations
  • Develop strategies that incorporate use of non-traditional data sources such as registries and real-world data as part of the plan
  • Interface with clinical investigational sites to ensure proper oversight / monitoring of Abiomed sponsored clinical trials
  • Interface with the Abiomed publications team to ensure a robust strategy to communicate research results
  • Provide input to Abiomed funded fellowship programs
  • Establish and maintain a professional and credible image with key physicians, consultants, vendors and lead the development of posters and oral presentations for scientific meetings
  • Maintain knowledge of competitive technologies in addition to medical, technical, and biomedical developments related to ABIOMED products



  • MD with Board Certification in Internal Medicine and Nephrology
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in clinical medicine
  • Demonstrated success in education, training, clinical research and publications in nephrology, and especially if in the field of acute kidney injury in the setting of cardiac procedures
  • Excellent analytical skills required; formal training in epidemiology and/or statistics is preferred but not required
  • Industry experience in a medical device organization (medical affairs, clinical research, or pharmacovigilance) is preferred but not required
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, motivational, and team-building skills, and the ability to work in a multicultural, global environment
  • Ability to collaborate in critical strategic business decisions
  • Ability to travel frequently (average 50%), both domestically and internationally (Germany, Italy and Japan primarily) once travel restrictions have been lifted secondary to COVID
