Under the direction of the Sr. Director of Corporate Health Policy & Government Affairs, the Associate Director, Health Policy and Reimbursement is responsible for working with the corporate health policy and reimbursement team to support Medicare and Commercial reimbursement and market access strategies for the complete Abiomed portfolio of products, including the flagship Impella heart pump line.  This individual will shape the public policy and reimbursement environment and execute successful payer strategies, including coding, coverage, and payment for current and future products.  This leader will work collaboratively and cross-functionally to communicate policy positions that shape a positive market access environment for Abiomed. 

Key Responsibilities Include


  • This individual will possess a strong understanding of reimbursement and health care policy, CMS policy, and process.  The role will support developing economic value strategies and reimbursement plans, supporting both pipeline and new market opportunities within Abiomed.
  • The individual will be responsible for understanding coverage and payment strategies and execution.
  • Providing analysis and interpretation of the business implications of policy issues to cross-functional stakeholders
  • Support a proactive, comprehensive CMS strategy to maximize patient access
  • Advise and prepare guidance on coverage, coding, and payment for US products
  • Interpret existing and emerging payer policies, competitive landscape, trends, pricing, contracting strategies, potential barriers to provider and patient access
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders as appropriate, including company participation in government forums and industry group meetings
  • Work across a matrix with colleagues in commercial, medical affairs, communications, patient advocacy, and other parts of Corporate Affairs to achieve business goals.
  • Monitor CMS and HHS agency activities of interest to Abiomed that shape the formulation of relevant public policy issues.


Skills and Requirements


  • Demonstrated leadership ability to identify and focus on strategic priorities.
  • Exceptional project management skills required.  Ability to manage numerous competing priorities under pressure while effectively collaborating with internal partners
  • Ability to process and work with Medicare and Commercial datasets
  • Strong familiarity with Medicare reimbursement, coverage, coding, and payment processes
  • Familiarity with the process for applying for CPT, ICD-10, NTAP and/or Pass-Through payment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to influence and effectively lead internal and external audiences to desired outcomes.
  • Sound business judgment and integrity and an ability to build credible, effective working relationships both internally and externally
  • Ability to anticipate the policy needs of the organization and proactively address them.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including writing about complex policy issues clearly and concisely.  Strong documentation skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize data and deliver a clear overview of opportunities and risks.
  • Demonstrated success in formulating health policy solutions and building consensus support with stakeholders
  • Experience with engagement with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
  • A strong team player



  • BA/BS and an advanced degree in public policy, health policy, public health, or a related discipline
  • Prior medical technology industry/ consulting experience in health policy
  • Formal training or experience in health economics is a plus.
