Abiomed is expanding its footprint in developing heart failure and renal therapies and is seeking a leader for our cardiorenal research domain. We are looking for someone with a great passion to solving big problems, taking risks and has the perseverance and grit to execute on long term projects.

 

The Associate Directior, Cardiorenal Research will lead a translational research program focused on developing a mechanistic understanding of how Abiomed’s family of percutaneous ventricular assist devices affects cardiorenal physiology and provides renal protection to improve patient outcomes. This program will address fundamental questions and inform business decisions about the research and development of future products in the cardiorenal space. Reporting to the Director of Academic Research, this position will oversee the planning, execution, and interpretation of data generated from preclinical, clinical, and Real-World data registry sources. This would be a highly visible position with a regular cadence of progress reports to Senior Leadership. She/He will have access to and will collaborate with Abiomed’s team of pre-clinical and clinical research scientists, clinical operations specialists, physicians, and engineers. She/He will be initiating industry/academia collaborations, working directly with KOLs, and managing investigator-initiated studies with research institutions. The Associate Directior, Cardiorenal Research will play a key role in driving innovative research, evaluate new technologies together with Abiomed’s venture group and will be managing a multi-year publication plan.

 

Responsibilities

  • Create and lead a world class research program dedicated to the impact of mechanical circulatory support on cardiorenal physiology and protection.
  • Collaborate with internal and external experts to generate rigorous scientific data, and contribute to development of dissemination plans, as aligned with the Medical Office to support the strategic plans for Abiomed’s therapeutic areas.
  • Ensure quality of design, execution, and publication of pre-clinical and clinical evidence studies.
  • Function as study co-lead with Medical Directors in developing study synopsis, protocols and reports
  • Oversee the development of team of scientists and research staff.
  • Identify potential intellectual property from within the research program and execute on prosecution of patents in consort with Abiomed’s Legal and IP Counsel.
  • Provide expert scientific input and opinion on potential investments and/or acquisitions of new assets to the Business Development team.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to ensure timely dissemination of research and clinical study data for presentation and publication
  • Ensure the highest scientific standards across the team through training and mentoring.

 

Requirements 

  • A PhD or MD with robust research experience in renal, cardiorenal, or cardiovascular physiology and subsequent post-doctoral training
  • 5+ years working in the medical devices space.
  • Deep understanding and direct experience of clinical trial design, GLP studies, and investigator-initiated studies.
  • A clear and established track record of scientific publications.
  • Experience in working in a matrix team environment.
  • Demonstrated track record of generating scientifically rigorous and value evidence from primary and secondary data sources.
  • Ability to lead high-functioning team of researchers and research staff.
  • Expert level understanding of the publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts within the medical and scientific journals, cardiovascular preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills across functions and roles, professional presentation abilities and experience, commitment to providing leadership by example.
  • Willingness to travel 20-30%
