Abiomed has the immediate opportunity for an exceptional, motivated Technical Fellow to join the quickly-growing Product Development team that will shape the field of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) delivery systems. In this newly created role, Sr Mechanical Engineer II- Research & Product Development will be a SME providing guidance to both internal and external development teams on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation systems and blood pumps. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Technical Fellow is responsible for technical input on product development and design integration as well as design and conduct verification in-vivo and invitro experiments in compliance with internal and regulatory guidelines.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • SME on blood contacting surfaces, mechanical pumps & oxygenator designs
  • Develop, coordinate and conduct in-vivo and in-vitro experiments with internal and external labs including but not limited to: 
    • Develop test plans
    • Protocol and database development
    • Site management and monitoring
    • Report writing
    • Publications strategies
  • Perform analysis and participate in design reviews
  • Participate and support complaint investigations and product evaluations
  • Participate in cross functional teams and projects
  • Provide regular status reports to cross-functional leadership teams
  • In collaboration with Director, secure & oversee outside vendors, university work and consultants
  • Maintain compliance to company standard operating procedures (SOPs) and applicable regulations
  • Maintain knowledge of competitive technologies in addition to medical, technical and biomedical developments related to Abiomed products
  • Maintain good understanding of clinical use cases



Required Qualifications:

  • PhD, Mechanical Engineering, in an applicable medical/scientific field
  • 10+ years of clinical research experience 
  • Experience with conducting in-vivo and in-vitro experiments

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with solid modelling, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and analysis (blood contacting surfaces, heat transfer, gas transfer)
  • GLP animal studies
  • In-vitro experiments including gas transfer studies & hemolysis testing
  • Biocompatibility
  • Expertise in blood pump and hollow fiber membrane design
  • Medical device research experience
